Make the screen 640x480 so I can read the text better. Jumped into
it, went to the map, to the Gulf War. Brings back all sorts of associations, things that
happen way back when, will deal w/ these later. Is this the use of hypertext? To build in
the reader a string of associations, to fill in the blanks w/ one's own experiences? Is
this limiting? Noticed that the hidden links allow me to read the whole piece before going
on while web hypertext w/ its underlining I always want to jump at the first link. Also
the "card" format of Hypercard makes small paragraphs a requirement, not the
endless scrolling down of web pages. I wonder how these limitations structured the format?
My mind going a mile a minute, trying to deconstruct the player,
can I mimic the format in Javascript? I think I can as state can be maintained in a frame,
long term state in a cookie or Perl database on a server, have "serious" readers
register, can't get too famous. I think I'll try as I have other uses for this besides
literature.
Ended up in a section of quotes about hypertext, the worm eating
itself, reminds me of JURGEN FAUTH's critique Poles in Your Face, writing
that is about itself:
"If that is all the medium invites writers to talk about,
then its promises are bound to be exhausted shortly."
